»Mass in General Relativity«

Abstract:
One of the central questions in general relativity is to find a suitable notion of quasi-local mass. In fact, this question appears first on Roger Penrose's list of open problems. After giving an introduction to the field, I will introduce the Bartnik quasi-local mass. This is perhaps the most promising and natural definition, although it remains poorly understood from a theoretical perspective. I will then explain the recent resolution of the Bartnik Stationary Vacuum Conjecture, formulated in 1989, and discuss how it sheds new light on Bartnik's quasi-local mass program. This is based on joint work with Lan-Hsuan Huang.

Hierzu ergeht herzliche Einladung.
