»Battery storage: a game changer for the energy transition?«

Abstract:
Electricity storage is a crucial element for achieving a net-zero-emissions energy system by 2045, as it enables balancing intermittent renewable generation with largely inelastic electricity demand. Since the expansion potential of pumped-hydro storage is limited, battery storage is gaining importance. In Germany, installed battery capacity has increased tenfold over the past five years. This development represents a major disruption for energy-system research, as most of the existing literature relies on non-storability of electricity. Several serious questions for policy makers, (private and commercial) consumers and producers now require new answers: Can system adequacy be ensured in the future? Will investments in renewable technologies remain profitable? What is the optimal control strategy of battery storage under price and generation uncertainty? In this talk, we outline how mathematical tools like multi- dimensional statistical modelling with alpha-stable distributions, stochastic decision theory and stochastic forecasting provide a valueable contribution to these interdisciplinary challenges. We will also shed some light on planned future research and the mathematical tools that will be used.
