»Geometry of gravitational waves«

Abstract:
Gravitational waves are among the most striking predictions of general relativity. Although Einstein predicted their existence more than a century ago and LIGO first detected them in 2016, their mathematical theory remains largely unexplored. In this talk, I will explain how new ideas from nonlinear partial differential equations, differential geometry, and topology shed light on the nature of gravitational waves. No prior knowledge of the subject is assumed.
