»Probability theory without measure theory? The power of Markov categories«

Abstract:
Probability theory is usually built on measure theory. In this talk, I will go beyond this and introduce Markov categories as a complementary higher-level language for probability theory. This language is more convenient to work with in a similar way as how a high-level programming language is more convenient and useful than machine code. To illustrate the utility of the framework, I will use it to state and prove de Finetti’s theorem. This is a classical result which complements the law of large numbers and is essential for the subjective interpretation of probability. The graphical nature of the proof in the categorical language makes it particularly intuitive, and applies to measure-theoretic probability with the same ease as to discrete probability.
