»Peierls Instability in one Dimension«

Abstract:
In this thesis, the ground state of a chain of 2N ions with 2N electrons located at the ion positions will be examined. The interaction between the ions and the electrons will be modulated by the restriction of the electron movement to tunnelling to nearest-neighbour ions. For such a system, Kennedy and Lieb proved in 1987 that the ground state is precisely the ground state predicted by Rudolf Peierls in the 1930s. The aim of this thesis is to explicitly write down all calculations and steps left out by Kennedy and Lieb in their original paper. Furthermore, the underlying physical model, the Su-Schiefer-Heeger Model, will be established. All necessary physical theory will be explained, although a basic understanding of theoretical quantum mechanics is necessary. Lastly, the results of the paper will be interpreted from a physical standpoint.
