»Slowdown phenomena in random walks with cooling random environments«

Abstract:
Random walks in random environments (RWRE) exhibit non-classical behaviour due to trapping regions that can confine the walker for extended periods. In the ballistic regime, where the walk has positive speed, slowdown events occur with probability decaying polynomially, in contrast to the exponential behaviour observed in homogeneous settings. In this talk, I consider random walks in cooling random environments (RWCRE), where the environment is resampled at a deterministic sequence of increasing times and remains fixed in between. Since resampling may remove trapping regions by replacing the underlying environment, it is natural to ask how this affects slowdown phenomena. I show that slowdown properties depend on the cooling dynamics, with the resampling frequency being the key parameter separating regimes where trapping effects are weakened from those where the classical RWRE picture is preserved.
