»Regularity and convergence of Willmore surfaces«

Abstract:
The characteristic biconcave shape of red blood cells can be explained by a model that describes cell membranes as critical points of the Willmore energy. This bending energy is given by the L^2-norm of the mean curvature. Since the mean curvature is the Laplace–Beltrami operator applied to the underlying immersion, the Willmore energy is in fact the geometric analogue of the biharmonic energy. In this lecture, I will first review classical regularity methods for Laplace’s equation. I will then explain how these techniques can be used to prove smoothness and strong convergence for weak solutions of the Willmore equation. These results can be applied to analyze biological phenomena involving cell membranes.
