| Abstract: |
| How to “visualize” the shape of a manifold is always a central theme in modern differential geometry. At the technical level, Riemannian metrics that arise in optimizing certain curvature functionals often serve this purpose. This talk will explore several approaches to “visualizing” the shapes of manifolds via Einstein metrics, a class of canonical metrics that optimize the Einstein-Hilbert functional. We will focus on both the global topological effects of such metrics and their refined metric geometric behavior at large and small scales. The primary objects of this talk are Einstein metrics with zero and negative scalar curvature. We will summarize known pictures as well as new clues and expectations for future exploration. |
