»The biharmonic Alt-Caffarelli problem«

Abstract:
The classical Alt-Caffarelli functional was introduced to describe the shadow zone that a fluid stream leaves behind after hitting an obstacle. In this talk we will discuss a higher order variant involving bending energies. Minimizers have to find an optimal balance between not bending too much and being nonpositive on a large set. These interests are conflicting if the boundary values are positive.

The lack of a maximum principle will result in different phenomena compared to those observed in the classical setting. Of special interest is the nodal set of minimizers, a free boundary where regularity breaks down. I will explain how one can study gradient behavior of minimizers on this nodal set. These insights yield optimal regularity results and a measure-valued PDE describing minimizers.
