Abstract: |
We discuss the equations for sound waves in a domain where some part of the domain has a special microstructure. We allow that small holes are connected via channels to small chambers. A sound wave that hits the boundary is not reflected in a standard way, but the sound wave interacts with the small chambers and an interesting reflection behavior can occur. We investigate a possible sound absoption effect, using elementary techniques of homogenization, which means that a complicated geometry is replaced by a simple geometry and a standard boundary condition on the complex boundary is replaced by a non-standard boundary condition on the simple boundary. We investigate the possible effective laws. One outcome is that, using only complex geometries and no damping material, we cannot expect sound absorption. Another outcome is that only first order corrections can be achieved; this means that materials have to be combined in a clever way in order to have a measurable effect. |
