Abstract: |
Convexity is, without any doubt, one of the fundamental concept of the Calculus of Variations and Optimization Theory. Since the very beginning of the last century, several generalizations appeared. One which is very relevant (for the applications in economics but for many other reasons too) is the concept of quasi-convex function, i.e. function with convex sublevel sets, firs formalized by von Neumann in 1928. This concept is strictly related to the concept of quasi-cyclical monotonicity which appear very naturally in optimal transportation, optimization and in the theory of revealed preferences. I will present what I know of the history and of the state of the art on the problem of the relationship between quasi-convexity and quasi-cyclical monotonicity and then a recent result obtained in collaboration with Paul Pegon (Université Paris-Dauphine PSL ) |
