Abstract: |
The study of chaotic (or hyperbolic) behaviour in dynamical systems has a long history. In the 1960s Dmitri Anosov introduced the notion of Anosov flow, motivated by geodesics flows in negative curvature. This started a systematic study of hyperbolic dynamics that turned out to be very successful and that highlighted how tightly intertwined topology and dynamics are.
The goal of this talk is to introduce hyperbolicity through examples and to give an overview of the main results concerning the global structure of Anosov flows. In particular, we will discuss shadowing and how that leads to Smale's celebrated spectral decomposition theorem. Time permitting, we will also see how to produce new flows out of known ones. |
