Abstract: |
In 1923, the Soviet mathematician Pavel Urysohn proposed a notion of approximate dimension, which is now known as the Urysohn width. The d-width of a metric space quantifies how close it can be approximated by a d-dimensional simplicial complex. This notion was introduced to measure dimensionality (though to an extent it fails to do so), used in approximation theory, appeared in the work of Gromov on systolic geometry, and nowadays it is a metric invariant of independent interest. I will introduce the width, and survey some of the highlights of its history and its connections to systoles, waists, sweepouts, curvature, and persistence. |
