Abstract: |
Processes of the highest societal relevance, like soil salinization or the production of geothermal energy, involve precipitation and dissolution processes in porous media. Of particular interest is the situation when such processes lead to miro-structural changes at the scale of pores, due to, say, precipitation and dissolution. In this case, one encounters free boundaries separating the space available for flow from the solid, impermeable part in the medium. This can impact locally the fluid flow, and also affect Darcy scale properties like the medium porosity or its permeability. In this presentation, we discuss different approaches for modelling precipitation and dissolution in porous media. In particular, to avoid difficulties related to the micro-scale free boundaries, we adopt a phase-field pore-scale model. Employing formal homogenization, a two-scale phase-field model is derived, in which the pore-scale and the Darcy-scale model components are coupled through the cell problems providing the effective parameters. For the resulting model, we discuss an adaptive two-scale scheme. It involves iterations between the two scales, linear iterations for solving the nonlinear cell problems, an adaptive selection of the elements wherein the effective parameters are computed, and adaptive mesh refinement. |
