»Burns-Epstein invariant and its gradient flow«

Abstract:
We study a global geometric invariant on closed Cauchy-Riemann 3-manifolds introduced by D.M. Burns and C.L. Epstein in 1988, which is constructed from local geometric invariants (i.e. connections and curvatures for G-structures) via Chern-Simons transgression 3-form. We show how it is indeed a global CR invariant, and under slight generalization introduced by J.S. Cheng and J.M. Lee, we perform variation computation to see that its critical point is spherical CR structure. In the end, we shall briefly review the study the gradient flow of such invariant and reveal a bit its geometric insight.
