| We study the regularity of elliptic equations with degenerate elliptic weights in the linear case as well as in the non-linear case. The weights are assumed to be positive definite, matrix-valued with pointwise bounded condition number. However, the weights are allowed to degenerate to zero or infinity. We establish a novel condition on the weight. Instead of a BMO (bounded mean oscillation) smallness condition for the weight, we use a BMO-smallness condition on its matrix-valued logarithm. Under this condition we show that local higher integrability of the data transfers to the gradient of the solution. The sharpness of our estimates is proved by examples.
