|We discuss a method that allows solving various problems related to wave and fracture propagation in discrete structures. It is based on the Wiener-Hopf technique and has shown its effectiveness in tackling a wide range of problems. Among these we mention: full/bridge crack propagation, phase transition in various lattices of different properties. The method allows extracting valuable information about the processes and reveals their specific features. We discuss both advantages and limitations of the method and highlight its possible advance in analysis of dynamic fracture of novel metamaterials. The latter is closely related to the challenging mathematical problem of factorisation of matrix-valued functions. We conclude this part of the talk by revisiting a few of the "simplest" problems demonstrating recent advances in the area. In last part of the talk, we will also highlight other recent research interests.|
