Abstract: |
In 1926, Hermann Weyl described irreducible representations of a compact connected Lie group $G$ in terms of homomorphims from its maximal torus onto $S^1$ (highest weights). Compact Lie groups are examples of symmetric spaces. In 1929, Élie Cartan extended Weyl's theory to compact symmetric spaces $X = G/K$. "Representations" of $X$ are given by (irreducible) representations of $G$ with a nonzero fixed vector for $K$, so called "spherical" representations. |
