Abstract: |
The Joule heating problem is a coupled nonlinear system describing the temperature and electric current in a conducting body. The nonlinear term poses difficulties when studying existence, uniqueness, and regularity of the system, especially in three dimensions. This, in turn, leads to difficulties when studying convergence for numerical methods, such as the finite element method. In this talk we focus on a very general setting in three dimensions with mixed boundary conditions. We overcome the issue with the nonlinear term by introducing a new variational formulation based on a cut-off functional. Using this formulation, we prove strong convergence of a large class of finite element methods under very mild assumptions on the data. |
