»Deformation theory of Hilbert squares through derived categories«

Abstract:
Moduli spaces of sheaves on a variety form a good way to study its geometric properties. The deformation theory of Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces has a particularly rich theory, giving rise to families of hyperkähler varieties (for K3 surfaces), or commutative deformations of Hilbert schemes associated to noncommutative surfaces (e.g. for the projective plane). I will summarise the state-of-the-art, and explain how using fully faithful functors between derived categories one can reprove certain aspects. In higher dimensions we consider the Hilbert scheme of 2 points (or Hilbert square) to ensure smoothness, and explain how our methods yield new and unexpected results regarding their deformation theory. This is joint work with Lie Fu and Theo Raedschelders.
