»Analysis of a penalty-free Nitsche method for Stokes, Darcy and Brinkman problems«

Abstract:
The topic of this talk is motivated by the numerical simulation of flow in porous media based on the Brinkman model as a unified framework that comprises the Stokes and the Darcy problems. We consider a Nitsche method for the weak imposition of boundary conditions that allows a smooth transition between the Stokes (high permeability) and the Darcy (low viscosity) regimes by formulating the discrete finite element problem in a common functional setting. In particular, we focus on the so-called penalty-free variant of the Nitsche method, for which stability has been recently proven in the contexts of diffusion and elasticity problems. We extend these results to the Brinkman model analyzing the features of the approach. We show that the method is unconditionally stable and robust with respect to the physical parameters, but, at the same time, it might requires a special treatment of non-smooth boundaries.
