»The mathematics of symmetry breaking and the Higgs boson«

Abstract:
Spontaneous symmetry breaking and the Higgs boson play a central role in the standard model of elementary particles, because the masses of the matter fermions and some of the gauge bosons originate from the Higgs field. We discuss the relation between gauge theories, Higgs fields and symmetry breaking in general and in the special case of the standard model in a language suitable for mathematicians.
