»On the relation between K- and L-theory for complex C*-algebras«

Abstract:
In the first half of the talk I want to give an introduction to K-groups of C∗-algebras and L-groups of group rings. My main goal will be to argue that the study of these invariants has interesting applications in various different fields of mathematics. For this I will state easy forms of the Baum-Connes and Farrell-Jones conjectures. In the second half of the talk I want to study the connection between these two conjec- tures. The key player in building a bridge will be the study of L-theory of C∗-algebras. I will try to make clear why this is the case and provide theorems on how K-theory and L-theory of C∗-algebras compare.
