Isometries of extrinsic symmetric spaces Abstract Extrinsic symmetric spaces are submanifolds M of a euclidean space V which are invariant under the reflection along any of its normal spaces. These are classified: They are precisely the hermitian symmetric spaces (with their standard embeddings) and all of their real forms. Most of the symmetric spaces of compact type belong to this subclass. We show that every isometry of M extends to an affine isometry of the ambient euclidean space. For hermitian symmetric spaces this can be shown easily, but for the real forms we need a case-by-case argument. In the talk we will discuss two cases explicitly, the unitary group U(n) and the Grassmanian SO(8)/SO(4)SO(4). In the latter case we have to discuss the so called triality automorphism which is related to the octonions and which we will explain. (Joint work with P. Quast and M. Tanaka) |
