»On the non-existence of manifolds of Kervaire invariant one«

Abstract:
I will discuss joint work with Mike Hopkins and Doug Ravenel in which we show that except in dimensions 2, 6, 14, 30, 62, and possibly 126, there are no manifolds of Kervaire invariant one. Much of the talk will focus on the history and implications of the result, and towards the end, I will sketch the relevant parts of the proof.
