| The Waist of the Sphere Theorem states that any continuous map S^n\to\R^k admits a point y in \R^k such that the (n-k)-dimensional Hausdorff volume of the preimage f^{-1}y is at least the volume of the (n-k)-dimensional equator in S^n: \min_f \max_y \vol_{n-k} f^{-1}(y) \geq \vol_{n-k} S^{n-k} We will discuss techniques and results where the sizes of preimages shall not be measured by their volumes but the size of their cohomology algebras. |
