| Let V be a finite dimensional vector space over ℝ, and let G be a semisimple subalgebra of End(V). Let ⟨,⟩ denote an inner product on V such that if g is an element of G, then gt is also an element of G, where gt denotes the metric adjoint of g determined by ⟨,⟩. If Σ = {v ∈ V : G(v) is bounded in V}, then Σ is a proper subspace of V, and Σ = {0} if G acts irreducibly on V. We look for functions μ : V → ℝ that are constant along G orbits, computable and positive only on vectors v whose G-orbits are closed in V. We will discuss a particular function μ that satisfies the first and last of these three criteria. |
