Abstract: |
It is well known that manifolds that curve more than the unit sphere are smaller than the unit sphere, and in case the maximal possible diameter is realized the manifold is isometric to a unit sphere (Chen-Toponogov's diameter rigidity theorem). It is also well known that if the diameter is at least half of that of the unit sphere then the manifold is either (topologically) a sphere or the manifolds is covered by a rank one symmetric space. (Diametr sphere theorem and its rigid companion). Likewise, so-called submetries by definition shrink the size of a space. In this talk we will discuss submetries on manifolds with positive curvature, and explain resulting rigidity phenomena in case the base has maximal diameter. Particularly nice and complete applications arise for Riemannian submersion and foliations. |
