»KK-theory and vertex algebras«

Abstract:
In noncommutative geometry one studies geometric spaces using methods from operator algebras and functional analysis. An important role is played by Kasparov’s KK-theory, a far reaching generalization of topological K-theory in the sense of Atiyah-Hirzebruch. Vertex algebras, in contrast, provide a mathematical framework to study conformal field theory. In this talk I will first review some background material on operator algebras and KK-theory. In particular I will explain how the construction of the Dirac cycle in KK(C_0(M),C) for a spin manifold M can be viewed as the quantization of a certain supersymmetric mechanical system with configuration space M. The main aim of the talk is to discuss an analogous construction starting from supersymmetric σ-models in 1 + 1-dimensions. Here vertex algebras and ideas from conformal field theory play an important role.
