| In the first part of my talk I want to recall the Morse index theorem for geodesics in Riemannian manifolds as stated, for example, in the famous book "Morse theory" by Milnor. Afterwards I will discuss some difficulties that arise when trying to generalize this result to semi-Riemannian manifolds and give a brief historic overview about this issue. In particular I will discuss a result due to Musso, Pejsachowicz and Portaluri from 2005 which generalizes the classical Morse index theorem to geodesics in arbitrary semi-Riemannian manifolds. The original proof of this result is purely functional analytic and in the final part of my talk I will present an alternative proof which uses topological K-theory instead. |
