»3-2-3 foliations and Hamiltonian dynamics near critical energy surfaces«

Abstract:
I will talk about two-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian dynamics near a critical level containing a saddle-center rest point. Under some suitable global assumptions on the critical level, we show that for energies slightly above the critical value, the energy level admits a system of transversal sections, called a 3-2-3 foliation. The binding orbits of this foliation is formed by three periodic orbits, one of them is the Lyapunoff orbit lying in the center manifold of the saddle-center. All regular leaves are transverse to the flow and consist of cylinders and planes. The 3-2-3 foliation implies, in the real-analytic case, infinitely many periodic orbits and homoclinics to the Lyapunoff orbit. I will also present some concrete Hamiltonians for which 3-2-3 foliations exist, including the Euler problem of two fixed centers in the plane. These are joint works with Naiara de Paulo and U. Hryniewicz.
