| The study of diffeomorphism groups of manifolds is an old and venerable subject in geometric topology, which has recently seen great advances at the hands of Tillmann, Madsen, Weiss, Galatius and Randal-Williams. Their combined work describes the cohomology of the classifying spaces of diffeomorphism groups of many even dimensional manifolds in a range of degrees bounded via their genus. During the talk I want to introduce the characteristic classes, known as tautological or Morita-Miller-Mumford classes, appearing in this description via sample computations in low dimensions and try to survey the results alluded to and broadly outline the strategy employed in their proof. I will then discuss the challenges of an analogue in odd dimensions and present some phenoma outside the stable range, in particular for aspherical manifolds. The original aspects of this talk are joint work with N. Perlmutter on the one hand and with M. Land, W. Lück and O. Randal-Williams on the other. |
