We investigate the energy landscape for
plastically deformed metals after annealing.
The model for the energy has two terms: a finite core energy where the core radius is assumed to be proportional to the lattice constant and an elastic energy which is proportional to the squared distance of the strain to the group of rotations.
Assuming the curl to be quantized (a lattice vector)
we prove in two dimensions a lower bound proportional
to the Shockley Read formula for small angle grain boundaries. In particular this estimate has as a consequence that small energy configurations are basically piecewise constant rotations in terms of strain.
