»Space of negatively curved metrics«

Abstract:
Let M be a "closed" smooth manifold; i.e. compact and without boundary. The space of all Riemannian metrics g on M is easily seen to be contractible since the space of all positive definite symmetric matrices is convex. But its subspace consisting of all those g whose sectional curvatures are all negative (i.e. negatively curved Riemannian metrics) is not obviously contractible. In fact in my talk I'll show that it is never even path connected when it is nonempty and the dimension of M is greater than 9. This is a report on joint work with Pedro Ontaneda.
