»The Grothendieck-Serre conjecture on principal bundles, affine Grassmannians, and failure of homotopy invariance«

Abstract:
Let X be a connected smooth variety, G a reductive group. A conjecture of Grothendieck and Serre predicts that two principal G-bundles over X are isomorphic locally in the Zariski topology, if they are rationally isomorphic (that is, if they are isomorphic over some open subvariety of X). I will discuss the recent proof of this conjecture. We will also discuss the relation with affine Grassmannians and homotopy invariance questions. I will only assume the knowledge of basic algebraic geometry.
