»Divisor braids«

Abstract:
I will introduce a new type of braid groups on an orientable surface $\Sigma$; the corresponding braids have coloured strands which are allowed to intersect according to certain rules specified by a graph $\Gamma$. A class of braid groups has significance in quantum field theory, as it realises fundamental groups of moduli spaces for nonlinear vortices on $\Sigma$. One can obtain metabelian presentations for these groups via a construction that makes use of a new type of link invariants for closed braids on the 3-manifold $S^1 x \Sigma$; this also leads to an interesting problem in number theory.
