Fifth International Conference on Finite Fields and Applications August 2 - 6, 1999 University of Augsburg, Germany

We will arrange a series of social events for the evenings to help everybody relax after a long day's work. Our schedule (not yet absolutely final) is as follows:

• Monday, August 2 -- Special invited lecture by H. Lüneburg on ``The History of Galois Fields", followed by a reception at the University.
• Tuesday, August 3 -- Reception by the Mayor of Augsburg in the celebrated historic ``Goldener Saal" of the Renaissance city hall
• Thursday, August 5 -- Piano recital
• Friday, August 6 -- Conference banquet

Additionally, there is the possibility of an informal meeting for interested participants on Sunday evening (August 1), most likely in a nice beer garden. Wednesday afternoon will be free; we encourage you to use this to explore Augsburg or its surroundings. Suggestions will be made to you upon arrival; however, no formal excursion will be arranged. Finally, there is an extra attraction shortly after the meeting: a total eclipse of the sun on Wednesday, August 11 -- and Augsburg is at the centre of the path of totality! (Consequently at Augsburg the eclipse will be total for more than 2 minutes.) Some participants might be interested in this, and may plan to stay on for the eclipse, either in Augsburg or somewhere pleasant nearby.
