Abstract: |
The topic of this talk are combinatorial structures, known as Steiner systems in combinatorial design theory, which arise naturally from certain configurations of points in a finite projective plane. A maximal arc of degree k in a finite projective plane Π is a set of points which intersects every line in either k or 0 points. The collection of the nonempty intersections of a maximal arc with the lines of Π is a Steiner system. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a Steiner system to be embeddable as a maximal arc in a projective plane are discussed. As an application of these conditions, it was shown recently that the Johnson plane of order 16 shares maximal arcs of degree 4 with the Bose-Barlotti plane and the Johnson-Walker plane of order 16. |
